Nights Passing

The night went by so slowly
As he tossed and turned in their warm bed
Wondering where she might be
And worse still who she might be with
Sleep just wouldn’t come
And his thoughts were like bad dreams
That played over and over in his head
And in his heart
He wondered if it was truly the end now
And over such a trivial thing
Just a comment that had been said without thought
That had made her turn to look at him in silence
And begin to pack a bag
While he asked her why
Over and over
Not yet understanding why she would go
Over such a small thing in his mind
So now in the dark he thinks of what he’s said
And finally understands
And chastises himself for being so stupid
He wonders once again
If she is gone for good
The night just won’t pass fast enough
But if it will just be followed by the day
Without her anyway
He wonders why he is so eager for it to pass
