Appreciation of Silence

Three years without water
the cactus points its finger of salvation
signalling to alcoholics
rudely honest like a child
bathing in the appreciation
of its own prickly silence.

I hope I finish this
so that I may know why it is I write
but words are not the answer for everything
flying squirrels
scrambling to stay at the top of the tree
offer so much more
than unshackled thoughts ever will.

And for now
I am freed
primed as salt laden air
or cold spray in the face,
astounding the oceans of aliveness
that dwell uncorked in this desert.
