Gear to Turn

If I were a gear to turn
meshed to others in this clock
with purpose yet unknown
I'd take tea to pass the time
on porcelain cups and saucers round
like the circle swept by arm

moving forward with no remorse
clicking with the plaintive whirl
the latter by the souls within
knowing place yet absent purpose
perhaps this is best for all concerned
resting far from familiar ground

set to move beyond the pale
many evoked by creator's hand
set to explore the wistful realms
beyond the grasp of sanity
Saint Isodore led the way
technology magic in extreme

familiar ground made new again
what was old is now new
invention's hand on the helm
the lost is found in the maze
dreamed by the masters of steam
if I were a gear to turn.
