there is no forgetting

she kissed me as if it meant something to her.
to me, it was merely a kiss.

a man’s got to start somewhere with a woman. if he can talk his way
close, she’ll expect him to kiss her. it’s an easy call: the soft pressure
of sullen Greta Garbo lips.

she’d lay on the bed with those eyes, too sexy & too sad, posing, as if
she were the seduced one. I’m the wrong guy for it, ‘cause I drop on
her like a thunderstorm, she guides me in removing her lacy outfit,
the secret Victoria couldn’t keep, so I don’t rip it. it’s a vicious thing to
see, my hands full of her hair, my mouth full of her after-midnight body.

before the bell sounds, her pretty sheets are a mess, her makeup
disappears in licks, & we lay there in an orgasmic tangle,
euphoric & wet.

I try to tell her the things she wants to hear, but my throat gets loud
with silence. she gets that look, that look of conquest that women get.
‘you don’t have to say it. I know you love me.’

when she felt herself falling into me, she should’ve said ‘oh f*ck,
not him!’ the women find my morbid tales of a broken heart & they
come to me, to be intimate with my secret passion. so I give it to them,
& they give me enough to get me through the lonely night.

some of them say ‘write with me. make me your featured whore,
because it’s just a poem.’  & it is.  it always is.

this woman, whom I call mistress, is here when I need her for coffee,
or to listen to my latest vanity. or for sex. I can’t recall the words that
made her fall in love with me, whether I said them or not. but I know
what a sin it is to use a woman…  a woman like her.

I knew from the start
those were not the words
to say…
