GLASS HOUSE

She had a friend in the wall
A shadow threw back the ball
Mother came home bruised again
But she will always know what’s best

Smoke still lingers on her hand-me-downs
Other kids say that she should drown
Father’s home again, no time for this
Cries herself a belated birthday wish

You shouldn’t show concern
I’m sorry the food has burned
I suppose I’m just distracted

Glass house
Lost, found
She is safe beneath the cupboard
Glass house
Too loud
I hear them screaming at each other
Glass house

Father grabs the belt now and then
Because her grades are slipping again
But there’s love in every lashing
It’s better than mother’s thrashing

She assures that outside corrupts
In her eyes, she begs of trust
All these years bleed into a sink
Takes the weight off what she drinks

You shouldn’t show concern
That home is proper burned
When they took too many tallies

Glass house
Lost, found
She is safe beneath the cupboard
Glass house
Too loud
I hear them screaming at each other
Glass house
