Better off Dead
The dead man
on a runaway horse
was smiling as he rode into town
He'd sooner be dead
than live in a world
that obliged him to wake
at first light
pee behind the bushes
wash in cold water
pull on clothes
clean his teeth with sticks
take a shit in the woods
forage for food
build a fire
eat
sleep
and do it again
the next day
He was smiling because
there were no more decisions
about whether to laugh or cry
no more worries about food
money
sexual prowess
food
the memory of screaming kids
even more money
or how to survive
alone and off grid
So with only the horse to be fed
he realized
he was better off
dead
