The Maze I Built
I built the maze with these hands
twists and turns to sate the thirst
addiction waited at the core
master found, now I am sub
the path was mine I’ll admit
nobody forced my hand to build
with baby steps I first moved forth
to shape the trap I now abide.
The first time was in the past
I was young and did not know
the comfort found near at hand
would always ask to return
just the once was not enough
twice was fine, just the start
an always cage had opened
asking only for my life.
The tool was there within my grasp
easy company to ease the pain
asking nothing in return
fiction spun to please the brain.
my mind desired only balm
from life’s travels troubles pressing in
I thought I found the simple fix
it did no harm, this was the untruth.
Now I stand in the maze
towering high as I pray
to find the exit before I die
from consequence of the lie
an exit must be somewhere
when chains are cast to the earth
then the master will emerge
no longer serf to the tools.
