Slam Poem - Don't Cry for Me
hello.
my name is garrett.
and some people may say
I'm disabled.
but is it really a disability or an ability
I don't know don't cry for me
though don't worry
I'm not worth crying for you see
you see me and you see loss
you see hopelessness
you see sadness
but don't cry for me
you're not inside my body
to make a judgement call
I may be having the time of my life
you don't know that
sure I may look sad on the outside
but I have no debt in that sense I'm free
don't Cry For Me
next time you see me
hanging out down the street
take a look at yourself you see
you see me and you see sadness
you say isn't that a shame
he must be the geek
he must have no life
good thing I don't have to go
Through that pain and strife
You look at me
and you say are you assume disability
equals or must equal incompetence
disability must equal lack of self-awareness
disability equals deviance sickness
but you see I look at you judging me
and think who really is sick who really has the sickness
you must keep up with the Joneses
and you look at people like me
and you think oh pity
isn't that a shame
I have a very fulfilling life
you may not see it
or it may not be apparent
right away but I do
and just because I don't talk or speak your way
or look like you do
I still do
so don't pity me
Don't Cry For Me
I'm alright
take a look at you
take a look at the Barbie doll image and what Society has crafted for the masses
Don't Cry For Me
I'm not worth crying for
and next time you see one of us on the street
go ahead come talk to us even let us in your door
thank you
