A Restless Heart

It was underneath the willow tree,
Where he was clear for all to see.
There he chanced to gaze at me,
And the melting of my heart.

I was taken by his face,
It took me from the time and place.
His eyes of coal and hair of lace,
And his courting was an art.

I never thought in all the world,
That I would find my heart unfurled.
His face was tan and his hair was curled,
Like a Spanish don.

It was underneath the willow tree,
Where he kissed me as he pleased,
When love was locked and bodies seized,
And trembling like a fawn.

He took me dancing in the town,
In the candlelight his skin was brown.
My pauper king without his crown,
My heart skipped with the beat.

There he called me his true love,
His voice as soft as a mourning dove.
Then all fear I was void of,
For no danger could I meet.

He took me by my steady hand,
Our feet echoed the rhythm of the band.
His hair in curls and his face was tanned,
To him I clung for my life.

He took me dancing in the town,
Our love was the deepest for miles around.
We waltzed and paced to a lilting sound,
His voice as sweet as a fife.

But none can hold a restless heart,
And restless love we cannot compart.
Time is ruthless and spoils the tart,
I died when I saw him go.

He rose from bed in the dead of night,
And I saw his form in the moonlight.
To not cry out took all my might,
Thus began my woe.

I let him off without a word,
For his fate and mine were ensured.
He flew from me, my careless bird,
And I never saw him return.

But none can hold a restless heart,
For soon it will be torn apart.
A fire starts as soon as your part,
And you never heal its burn.
