Seneca

Terra cotta earth cracked in cuneiform
Spreads in patterns under pink-frosted toenails
I watch my tears fall, swirl through crevices
Back into the earth, into the beginning
Of this love, of this life
When I met you and you breathed fire into me
through stolen hot kisses, painting my body
in touch, coloring me passion
until bright hues poured onto the bed
and washed into faded white

and our sweaty palms still, interlocked,
fit yin and yang perfectly
while our bare feet scrambled across hot rock
then soft grass, and into the shimmering lake
where you held me, wordlessly
your eyes searched mine and connected in thought
two lovers who knew eachother; body and mind
our souls spoke volumes
without making a sound

the air turned colder; I wrapped myself in you
we had the forever everyone wanted, I thought
but forever waned quickly
the sun painted the last salmon streaks
across the twilight sky
and in those last seconds
when shadows stretched to their deaths
I was wrapped in my memory
sitting on the pier alone
