When Dreams Aren't Safe

Safe places in the mind aren't always safe spaces
Even if you're consciousness is the one that makes them
Create an escape but that escape can be tainted
Can't always control who and what will invade it
Reality and fantasy entangle in blur
No way to know what's real, can't ever be sure
Upside down, backwards, a little forward then reverse
Trapped in a daze while wild emotions disburse
Scared of your own mind, almost terrified
A glimpse of light appears but walk towards it then it hides
A game of the darkness that no one asks to play
The more you try to move the longer you will stay
Push it away, try as hard as you can to fight
Till it beats you down with its cold blocks of ice
Rendering you frozen in a dome of mental torture
Wondering when it'll decide the emotional event is over
Sweetly dream up the blissful escape you crave
Then watch it turn to worse than all you've tried to evade
Next a little piece of hope to cling to burning bright
But it's just another trick to make you struggle for your life
Nightmares strike at all hours of the clock
They steal time away and to them you belong
They say you fed the darkness and only you make it strong
Your ability is gone to distinguish right from wrong
Better not to dream at all
Months just leave you weak
And weeks just leave you
There is no way to feel safe daydreaming
When you haven't felt safe dreaming in days
Or nights
