Neighbor

 I found her by mistake
she lived a few houses down from us
I’d been playing ball
until it was dark and I was headed home
I cut across Mrs. Fussell’s yard
my eyes saw light seeping from a window
the shades weren’t pulled completely
I stopped dead still
not believing my eyes
Mrs. Fussell was on her bed
naked as all get out
I looked around
no one was about
so I crept closer
watched as she used her hands on herself
heard mother calling for me
Mrs. Fussell was probably forty-years-old
I was thirteen
I found a reason to be at her house
whenever that little sliver of light shone
from her bedroom window
her husband worked at the paper mill
like my daddy
this went on
for over a month
finally the last time I was there
she used her hands on herself
like always
but then she got out of bed
and walked out of the room
when she came back
she stood directly in front of the window
all I could see through it
was her from the waist down
she said, I just opened the back door
I took off running like that Black Sabbath song
worked up my courage about a week later
went back
the bedroom was dark
the shade pulled all the way down
I know I missed out on a Mrs. Robinson moment
ahhh . . . but she scared the hell out of me
I was thirteen
she was Mrs. Fussell
