Autumnal Appetites

It’s warm, a little muggy, and the air
is thick with musty scents: the willow herb
competes with the imperfect, fetid stench
of love that slicks together; will you care
for fresher perfumes? Rosebay helps to curb
the appetites, although those thighs will clench
as hard as any can, for this affair
is one she wants to last; she would preserve
the memories at least: here comes the wrench
that will pull them apart; and she’ll not dare
to hold it off forever – since she’ll serve
him better by avoiding all offence
that she might give, were she never to purge
warmth, surrendering to September’s surge
