ROME
My eyelids orange
Relaxed by the splashing of water
And children's laughter
And I wonder
Can I hold you here
For a moment
The moment you knew that you were loved
The moment before you gave up
Up Up
On me
On me
Place your soft lips
Soft as down
Roam down these worn Spanish Steps
Step down to me before you become
Divine
Divine
Paths that go to and not come between us
Between ancient warriors beside pizza parlours
Between low rent dives and divinity
And I wonder
What will our Rome become
When the cost of unleavened bread ferments
And religious intolerance descends
Picking bare Diocletian's cabbage
Leaves
Leaves
Us
No more
Than friends
Relaxed by the splashing of water
And children's laughter
And I wonder
Can I hold you here
For a moment
The moment you knew that you were loved
The moment before you gave up
Up Up
On me
On me
Place your soft lips
Soft as down
Roam down these worn Spanish Steps
Step down to me before you become
Divine

Paths that go to and not come between us
Between ancient warriors beside pizza parlours
Between low rent dives and divinity
And I wonder

This is lovely, mournful, I think the echoed lines is a beautiful device. This stanza in particular was moving to me
Paths that go to and not come between us
Between ancient warriors beside pizza parlours
Between low rent dives and divinity
You ask poignant questions it seems about the nature of man and our society. I also love the gentleness of the opening stanza. Enjoyed this.

Oh whale sir, each time I reread your piece I kept seeing more of an image, but also, hearing your voice briefly echoing as if calling up to her from a narrow, ancient alleyway in Rome..,
"On me
On me..."
"On me
On me..."

Sometimes as 'friends' is nothing but a wound that never closes but oozes slowly in silence.

We may be sitting on different benches in different places, brother. But, we're still sitting beside one another.

The far reaching landscape of kindred always is, brother.
Whether is a vast mountain, sea, or cityscape matters not;
It's the feeling it evoked of being understood.
Could this not be called home?

a chapter ends, but not the story,
so we hope & begin again
as your stanzas end & begin again...

Painfully beautiful.
Your words capture the soul, and clench the heart.
Adore this piece. 💓

You've become gravity around
me love..
my tears are drawn down iinto
a puddle below my feet..
I can't say..I can't even finds
adequacy to express what
my soul' s heart is feeling right
now..
You've dug below my soils..
Speechless
-Howlings
