ROME

My eyelids orange
Relaxed by the splashing of water
And children's laughter

And I wonder
Can I hold you here
For a moment
The moment you knew that you were loved
The moment before you gave up
Up Up

On me
On me

Place your soft lips
Soft as down
Roam down these worn Spanish Steps
Step down to me before you become

Divine
Divine

Paths that go to and not come between us
Between ancient warriors beside pizza parlours
Between low rent dives and divinity

And I wonder
What will our Rome become
When the cost of unleavened bread ferments
And religious intolerance descends
Picking bare Diocletian's cabbage

Leaves
Leaves

Us
No more
Than friends
