little miss Cliche'
she champions her dark, & defends it positively
her stamp of approval is her signature: tpd
she’s an orphan of dreams, foster child of poetry
but she would give up her sonnets for a real lover
and swap metaphors for kisses
she’s a girl who desires to be a woman
I told her to hold the fountain of her youth
but a while longer; it will fall away like a chrysalis
she’ll emerge as the bountiful feast of Woman
her body will be a vessel of love & sexuality & heartbreak
of labor & struggle & endurance
she will savor the book of earthly delights
as she fingers the pages
she is never quiet as a mouse
and refrains from being loud as the roaring wind
deep as the ocean & vast as the sky
and perhaps my mentor Cummings would proclaim her
small as a world & as large as alone
she’s told me I have knowledge of poetry
and if I do, it is the years & the roads & the storms
that have beaten it into me
when I have fallen, unable to bear the torch
she will pick up the flame & run with it
to bring light to the shadows of Cimmeria,
to burn down the night
but that is some other tomorrow
for now, let’s adjourn to the café around the corner
we’ll have coffee & select our desserts
and make a poem full of clichés on purpose
her voice is the spark
the indelible mark
of the positively dark…
