I DON’T HAVE A GUN

(posted in the horrible HOLIDAY MASSACRE competition
as a protest...)

This is the part I hate the most;
My hands above my head, exposed.
God knows, I have the words I need
To get them free and out alive.

“Cease fire” I hear it echo back
Sporadic shots reduce to none,
Sweat and Kevlar move me then;
Shouting I don’t have a gun.

How many times I’ve danced this dance,
With guns in front and guns behind.
And me the open space between
With every goddam gun on me

I hear the words begin to flow,
Everything I can and I cannot.
It’s all I know; I’m just a guy
Who wants this angry blood to stop.

I know one day my luck will end.
One crazy man, that’s all it takes.
It might be theirs, it might be ours,
‘Cause hate destroys all bonds

And now begins my long walk back
Across that open friendless space.
Again with hands exposed, I’m done.
“Don’t shoot!” I'm screamin', “I don’t have a gun…”

Author's Note: I wish to thank the Mod's
for pulling that competition.
