Curios

Identified by dental records
The victim of a falling star
Put that baby in his pocket
Then shattered in the padre's yard

Immediate family caught the shards
Distant relatives the ashes
And now gathered for the reading, late,
And the remaining baubles passed around

Books of unknown origin
The secrets of the Nile
Vinyl records with worn grooves
Billie Holiday and fever
Memorabilia from the boardwalk
Mermaid tears, "the real thing"
Various implements of torture
Discretely padded, rubber bound
Pictures of his final ex
Now a reigning queen in New Orleans

All this more or less divided
The curios of a drifter's life
Treasures and trash of equal value
Blessed or cursed, depending on the view.
