ANCIENT GOD

(a sonnet)

Leave for ancient god your sacrifices,
Mark valueless such supplicated gain.
Pander not to my considered "vices,"
Be true to self, from condescend refrain.
If you will love, then love my self complete,
Perform no act to silence want alone.
Do none for me that from yourself retreat,
For gift unhappy brought leaves debt I own.
Return of what I give is all I seek,
That full embrace for full embrace, no less.
No foolish bargain struck that makes love weak,
Or wounded soul from love's untrue caress.
No tribute sought, no forced or false reprieve,
For ancient god those sacrifices leave.

Author's Note: a sexual relationship as seen through the prism of my lover's relationship with her prior boyfriend when he reentered our lives many years later...

when she felt compelled to inform me of all the formerly misrepresented details...

Showing me how I bore the "benefits" of the restrictions placed on me for HIS not considering her abhorrence at performing certain acts...

And how it became apparent that I was merely his f***ing surrogate...
