Haunted

The air grew heavy
as twilight did fall
shadows were growing
across my wall
the shadowy presence
at whom once I had scoffed
made it self known
with a series of knocks

At first I did wonder
what was the cause
what was it asking
or was it at all?
could there be rodents
racing through my walls
imagined or real
I hear a foot fall

The footsteps approached
yet no one was there
they moved right past me
and ascended the stairs
I'm sure that I'm sane
I'm not hearing things
the temperature drops
my ears start to ring

The hairs on my neck
begin to stand tall
as again down the hallway
came the foot falls
along with the noises
I began to smell
a faint dank odor
had fouled the air

The air in the house
became quite dense
emotional pressure
made muscles tense
a wave of nausea
welled up from within
threatening to unsettle
a feeling so grim

I started to look
around through the house
intending to find
the cause of it all
but empty and forlorn
just like my life
the house remained quiet
the rest of the night
