From a Cage

Some cages are so comforting,
With spaces wide as the day is long.
In freedom some cannot take wing:
So lend smaller worlds their song.

Frail hands crafted these tinder bars
That so easily would ignite
If I would unleash the purer stars
Crafted in the sorrow of plight

My plight for teardrops
My plight for teardrops
If they only would fall
I could gather them all
And tear apart the fetters
That dim the gold of my feathers.

But where oh where would I fly?
I fear drowning in the sky,
That the clouds should crack and fall
From hope’s weight in one so small.
Or if in my first true flight
I blend into the night
And forget the safety where I crawl?

Someone tell me of high peaks,
The summit my courage seeks
But tell me in a nursery rhyme,
For I do not dare the chance to climb.

While others fearlessly flew
I sang long a low lament
For where the breezes went
That might have born me to a moon so blue.
But smile to know at length
There is a gathering in my strength,
For my new stars wish to shine for you.
