Tell me Father—about Heaven.
Is it there that no men cry?
I confess to thee and thine
Only in secret have I bled.

Some say all is forgiven—
Then what sins can reach the sky?
What throne would give a blatant sign
That these clouds are mine to tread?

I see roads before the wanderer yawn
One familiar, one leading far; unknown
And when he sees the forms that have gone
He walks the latter—all alone.

Tell me what I see.

Ere I dream—Father tell me
Of the far-off light I see
So like the heart of stars
Soaring through what had been ours.
Yet this freedom locks me at the signpost
Where I find only one waiting ghost
And I stir ere I can understand
The meaning of his guiding hand.

My soul Father is downward driven—
I cannot explain to thee why
That though I view the gilded shrine
Anon from that peace I have fled.

Tell me what I see.
