There is a Heaven Within my Grasp

I

There is a Heaven within my grasp;
To some it is a pleasant mask,
To others a labyrinth of haze
The grey of storm-clad days
And in those halls there is no escaping from
The carcasses we have become
Our ears bleeding for a foreign tongue
Of a devil’s hymn unsung.

II

And how my blood becomes the veil
O’er leaves of a forgotten tale
A tale of a resurrection’s burn
Where blank the pages turn
Read in the shade of fungal streams
Of the cemetery’s fetid dreams.

III

In the rain where I lie at the gate
Of a vision desolate
Where the rainbows invitingly
Say my soul shall be free,
But the soul is broken—the soul in a chain
That binds me to the lightning vein.

IV

Twin souls are locked in here
To suffocate
Roving in the silken fear
That is their fate
The palace now a cell
With windows glazed
Enraptured in the living Hell
Where a black throne stands upraised
Feasting on one starlit core
That sang in peace before.

V

O’er sands of the horrid dune
Rises slow the weeping moon
The sands shift freezing round and round
While our souls crawl the ground—
In the distance there calls
The beckon of high city walls
Where the new labyrinths await
And we new faces may create.
Where we drink menace in our eyes
And the bells toll their secrets to the skies.

VI

And in that city what bones
Await our wandering on the stones
That crack as eons die
And the ill birds cry
Feasting on the flesh of hours
While wilt the melancholy flowers,
Where weeps something in the haze
Hidden from the blessing of the rays
And as the night fades to purest black
The gate closes at our back
And a new trial alas is born
For the masks we have worn.
