Old man lie still
Old man,lie still,lie still
in peace dank-dark,.
Those painful years
disappointed as you,
a sail, soured before winds
you should not have trusted.
On your bike blue and trim
the costliest you ever owned,
always setting off against the wind
looking to an easy homeward ride.
The mandolin in the loft, round belly
silent now, once nestled in your lap
the plectrum woven in the strings
Silent as once you were
behind the shy politeness.
Now I understand.

Those painful years
disappointed as you,
a sail, soured before winds
you should not have trusted.
On your bike blue and trim
the costliest you ever owned,
always setting off against the wind
looking to an easy homeward ride.

Silent as once you were

Now I understand.
