The Robin

Crescent dear who remains with dawn
Whereto has the robin gone?
Lost in shade is her song
Where the Dead may feel no wrong,
Around skylines by angels blessed
Their chords locked within her breast
In the lone mist of her nest.

Once her song laid the lovely scene
Of the snows upon the green,
Such notes alas confined
In the terror of my mind
Whose waves swallow silently
The luster of so lone a melody—
And love from out such notes doth bring
The song that I would dare to sing.

Fair dawn—thy rising haze of blue
That breeds the diamond dew
Poison me with the robin’s crest
In a mournful tide of rest
That an Eden pervades all
Where the loathsome vermin crawl
O’er mine eyes closed by coin
That the dead all may join
In the sorrow binding me within
The song of that fair robin.
