The Shamrock Song

- The Shamrock Song -

Beneath the willows, by the pool where swim the tiny fish,
Many a gentleman and maid, would oft go to make a wish.
Even I, shamrock in hand, would cast it out upon the water,
And wish for a magical kiss from some beauteous daughter.
But pools are not as magical as young minds will oft believe,
And shamrocks are but clovers with four leaves, not three!
So from the pool in woodland green, I left one summer day,
To seek my wish on my own, and so make it come my way.
But the magic of the greenwood is as less when not in view,
And time makes more of memories, than ever was for true.
Even so, once in a while I’ll pluck a shamrock in the fields,
In the hot old summertime: when such beauty nature yields.
Perhaps you’d be the maid I seek, and so I’ll give it forth…
The shamrock I’ve been holding for you, high be it’s worth!

Four leaf clovers are so rare, even in the Emerald Isle fair,
But here across the ocean blue, you’ll find so few to spare!
I’ve given so many to maidens pretty, until I’ve run all out,
For not all that is fair is blessed, and so I’ve had my doubt.
My heart, it trembles at the thought of finding no maid at all,
And long I’ve sung my fairest song, and none hear my call.
So long ye willows, farewell ye pool, and dreams once fine,
If only dreams were grand enough, to make a maiden mine!
I’ve been to all the holy places, and prayed prayers aloud,
And I’ve been to all the lucky sites, where oft goes a crowd.
But prayers and luck are not enough, when love is all I need,
And so I sing of the shamrock, this knight upon noble steed!
Can you hear me from where I sing?
I will hope that you can,
I have a song, but no precious ring.
Yet I must be your woman!

I’ve been in the societies, where secrets are often the trade,
I’ve been in the battles, where I did swing my shining blade.
I’ve lived enough for a dozen women, with more yet to do,
And so I offer up my song, beneath a sky becoming so blue!
I hear the birds are calling, and their voices cry a symphony,
But not a single note of it, can match a fair maid’s company.
A dance is best when two there are, upon the marble floor…
Dance with me my pretty maid, so we will laugh once more!
Tie a ribbon in your hair, and pin a daisy or two right there…
Now your beauty is beyond compare, so let us Heaven dare!
Dare to dance as the blessed may, sing like angels will…
Dare to live and love to the fullest, and embrace every thrill!
There is no point in waiting long, when I am so easy to find,
Just open your heart, tell me you care, and open your mind.
