Working Magic

The hallway floor is patterned. Herringbone
Seemed fitting for the ‘fishy’ goings-on.
Though, now, we have moved-on; I may well own
Up to your fears. So, was it really wrong
Of me to have you crawl from the front door?
You knelt and kicked it shut so many times,
With heels or flats and barefoot, rather more
Than you’d have liked, in these much colder climes.
Had you not been beholden to me, bound
To do as you were bid, regardless how
You felt – would you have done it? I’d have found
Another way to work that magic. Now
That it is over, confess: feel the urge
To crawl that length of floor, like the slattern
I took you for.  Then you will never purge
Thoughts instilled by that herringbone pattern
