Well Worn

 My wallet is leather
Dark brown leather
It looks beat up
Its corners curled
It has numerous
Scratches and marks
Loose and cut stitching
On one of the corners
It has seen much action
It’s well used but still
Fit for purpose
I should replace it
Get a new shiny one
But I’ve grown attached
To it over the years
It has warmth about it
It feels safe and secure
It should last a lifetime
Everything about this
Wallet, reminds me of
The state of my heart

Inside my wallet
There’s some paper money
Not a great deal
Coins in its pouch
Three credit cards
All spent to the max
Several retail receipts
Previous purchases
A prostitutes business card
A diabetics med card
And some worthless fluff
There is a photo of you
A much younger you
A time when you were happy
When you used to smile
A photograph of the children
When they were kids
Innocently smiling happily
The photos are well worn
My wallets contents remind
Me of life as it is now
Essentially broke, no
Credit, no life to speak of

I take my wallet
Everywhere I go
Everywhere I go
You and the children
Are always with me
At this time of year
In vain I wait
For those in my wallet
To send a card
Or to make that phone call
I would give up
This old leathery heart
To spend one more Xmas
With those that I love
Those who used to love me
I close my wallet
For another year
