Moonlight in December
Chill night, grey, chill, night
dark sentinel shapes,
once friendly green and gold,
now grey and merge in one.
Still, cold, cold on cold,
hours yet before the sun,
must wait and shiver,
watch the fearful moon
beam its frosty light.
The sneering skull steel grey,
cruel sucking in the sun
passing on filtered light
mean and cold, cold on cold.
So still, grey again,grey.
No lovers in the garden,
owls shiver in the barn,
mice, afraid, stay home,
no dogs bark, tails between their legs
while cows, in steaming huddles,
chew the cud, waiting dawn,
green grass and friendly sun.
