Fond Day--Thy Winds Softly Crawl

Fond day--thy winds softly crawl
As the robins sing over all.
Canopies, curious, by starlight wrought
Their petals fall to the appointed spot
Where his fingers so lightly trace
The tears that haunt my fallen face
As we make our winged way
Where the ghosts of blissful day
Haunt with the sun's forgotten gold
That shone on dreams in days of old.

In that field by ruins tenanted
With the bones of hours slow and dead,
Where constellations unknown
Bow to a new moon's shadowed throne
Where high grasses whisper song
To that zodiac's eternal throng,
Their sabers shining with the sunrise
Of this strange bejeweled paradise:
A window only we see through
To alien dreams of unknown hue.

Parting my orisons as we move
To the new gods of fairest love,
I fear a road may lead me far on
Beyond that brilliant dawn
While the stars follow the guide
Who sings their names by my side,
While I drag the nightmare chains
Of the horrid shade that remains
Threatening that my own road would pave
A passage to the lilacs that line my waiting grave.
