Decending the Ghat

( a Rensaku )

balancing a clay cup
long gone cold, my wet silks cling
as I stand near a
half-naked woman bowed and
bathing in the river Ganges

and I watch smoke curl
up from the pyres of heavy
earthen bodies
dissolving in the shallows
while all the lies of the world burn
