Re-entry
high in the blackness of clearest night
framed by an open window, vapor trails
razor-cut through a morning sky
re-entry— pieces of space rain down,
streaks of silver atmospheric shimmer
ghosts of astronauts returning, silent in
the cold void where summer cannot reach
I watch past your ear while you move
over me, quiet breath, soft nostril gusts
a single grunt suggests your voice, and
I look away from the sight brought to earth,
pulled back by the deep welling warmth
as your ship plummets into the gulf—
recovering while, unnoticed from the open
window, the residue continues to fall

I remembered what poem this reminded me of. We look out into the universe and observe the spiritual beauty it reveals, while it looks down on us and desires to remember the beauty we feel as human.

After all these years when I didn’t know of your reply when you told me about “Phantom Anniversary” by Kim Addonizio, I was looking for a particular piece of mine about 15 minutes ago when I came upon my “Re-entry”, and your comment. And I googled to find it just like that. It’s wonderful - I knew right away why mine reminded you of hers. I wish I’d known of it when the CC in her honor was ongoing, my entry would have meant so much more.

“Phantom Anniversary”
Imagine the marriage lasting,
the lilies blooming in the black vase
for years, the water still fresh.
The man and woman are looking at each other
as they fuck, blooming and looking,
and the angels are looking, too,
opening their beautiful abstract mouths
as though they are about to say something
neither difficult nor true.
The man and woman are oblivious.
They grow fainter and fainter without caring.
And the angels fold their wings flat
and plummet toward them like stones.

I enjoyed several things:
- The flowed well, and circled back to the window in the end, which added to the comfy feel of this poem.
- The twin levels of outer space, and the earth connected by the ghosts of astronauts returning
- this slow, sensual piece deserves to be savored.

This is a metaphor I would never have thought of Jade, but you managed to bring a tragedy into a scene of passion that makes perfect sense. The imagery of the shuttle breaking up is powerful in its own right, but you give it a whole new perspective in sensual after-play...
