SAFE & WELL FED
It wasn’t there,
the big one,
when the four smaller creatures,
animated and noisy,
carried me away
to my new home
When we arrived
it was there
towering above me
like a tree with giant paws
it showed big teeth
I thought i was a goner
Leaning over me
it stroked me behind the ears
wow that felt good!
it didn’t hurt me
but made softer, deeper noises
than the smaller creatures
In my new home
I always have food, water
and plenty other curious things
to chew
one that makes me tingle all over
when I bite it through
The bigger creatures make loud noises
when I chew on some things
THUMPER NO!
and they take it away
the giant one
brings me tasty, crunchy things to chew
Two furry creatures, my size,
live here too
they have long tails, sharp teeth and claws
sometimes they drink my water
when they come too near I THUMP!
the bigger creatures come running
My home has turned light and then dark
many, many, many times
I hurt too much to hop anymore
my back paws don't work
I can only turn in a circle
to find food and water
I fear being eaten by the others
but they don’t visit anymore
the giant one lifts me up
makes me lay more comfortably
making long, soft, beautiful noises
then I am not afraid
I can’t make many noises
never had to complain
but tonight I know something is wrong
the giant one passes me by
as loud as I can I say PLEASE STAY!
startled it turns and then sits beside me
I lay flat now
staring at the big ones face
it strokes my fur and makes tender noises
“it’s okay Thumper bunny, it’s okay you can go”
I am so happy for the company
all is dark now the pain is gone

I'm still crying because your poem is so sad though beautifully written. You must have loved him much ... and it's so good for him and you that you were with him when he had to go. You were there for him as he was there for you when he was a family member. Reminds me of our dog Lupus, when the day came he got his stroke and died in our arms, in the garden, inbetween the marguerites. His favorite place. He's still in our hearts and still missed. Thank you writing this wonderful poem! xoxo

We did love her very much. She wasn't a cuddly bunny but she was a constant presence. The thing I miss the most is feeding her the cuttings from making a salad. Thank you for sharing your touching "Lupus" story. I too miss Waldo and Max , the dogs I had as a child. Thank you so much for reading my poem and for the awesome comment.

So sad..... reminds me of a rabbit I had as a small kid. I can recall how Twitchy made a small side yard his racetrack and kingdom. Made me cry but a wonderful poem Gahdess.

Don't feel sad.She was old and in pain. Ready to transition. It was actually a peaceful, beautiful experience. I miss her everytime I prepare a salad...I loved giving of my veggie cutting scraps. I appreciate very much your kind words of encouragement.🙏😘
