Rumor

And so after some broken and unrefreshing sleep
I arise to the darkness
Broken itself by the moonshine in the night
And the stars still shining so garish in the sky
The morning sun just a rumor in this sudden wakefulness
I wander the silent house in silent confusion
Thinking broken thoughts of when I might really rest
A cigarette my only companion again
I smoke in the darkness and moonshine
Waiting to see if the rumor will bear truth again
I dare not look at the face of the clock
Not wanting to know just how little sleep I’ve had this night
My day stretches before me so full of frustration
Once more filled with so many pains to bear
Some in my body which feeds on itself
And some in my mind wondering why not someone else
Uncharitable thoughts I know
I wish the rumor would remain just that
Some mornings can be so long
