Friendship

The breezes all have faltered--bells no longer ring
Since the days they left me in youth's fairest spring.
We spoke of friends forever
Forever and a day
They swore to leave me never
Then all were swept away.
They came, but none could understand;
They came, then came no more
Due to the distant fairy land
That I was dying for.
They came--they went without farewell,
And locked was every door
So now I pray where lone I dwell
For what was mine before.
If one could but see me weep
And know how great I yearn
Perhaps I could his presence keep
And he keep mine in turn.
But all I know are ancient leaves
Characters long dead and all unreal
And my friendless soul forever grieves
For what I once did feel.
Early to rise, but early to bed
To forget I am alone
An eidolon--the living dead
In this lot I call my own.
Alas I resign to such a fate
Not one belongs to me,
Alas I fear it is too late
And alone I shall forever be.
