Image for the poem woman at the well

woman at the well

I’ve travelled a long time
slept on the ground
I’ve eaten what nature provided

the wind is my only companion
and loneliness is large
larger than the desert

out of the dark I found this place
the woman at the well
my throat was laced with the road’s dust

I did not speak
but she gave me water
cool & pure in an earthenware cup

I found warmth & tranquility
here I will rest, in the shade of her beauty
she will teach me things

the songs of birds where the valley begins
the parables of the story tree
un-worded poetry, if we listen to the wind

how a woman makes an amphora
and draws water from the well
but a man only drinks

then she walked away
water bearer she is
but she carries so much more…
