Coffee and CIgarettes

I wake before the dawn and I’m not too sure of sleep
My eyes are hot and lines of age are etched so deep
Upon a face that lives on smoke and coffee black
There are no dreams that I recall when I look back
And I look far away into the future bleak
No reason there for changing things which I might seek
Just endless nights and days too bright through smoky eyes
I wonder why a change might even come to one as weak as I
And in the days the words won’t come and music dies within my hands
My sharpened instruments of change are changed to things of blunted steel
The only change I seek is deep within a heart so cracked and dry
I wish for change so it might be the one to feel
The prayers of the holy cannot heal what isn’t theirs to wield
And the minds of science churn through medicines in hopes to change what I might feel
Science as religion will not hope to change the heart
As disbeliever I show my broken soul for them to heal
In the end it’s coffee black and cigarettes through endless days
And endless nights of dreamless sleep and twisted sheets in clutching hands
Emptiness runs through it all I finally see from deep within this sleep
An empty soul and empty heart of an empty grasping man
