where kisses are cheap

the only thing I know for sure about love is that
in my neighborhood you could buy an hour’s worth
of it for fifty bucks. except with my hair trigger, I
never got the full hour.

when things get too quiet, I go to Roxy’s night club
over on the strip. they draw a crowd of ladies who are
lonely enough to take a chance on drifters & castaways,
even if they get burnt. I’ve met a few women there.
sometimes they’re decent, beautiful people; sometimes
they’re just beautiful.

once, on a stormy night, which isn’t unusual in this town, I
met a dame there named Laura. she liked to sing. not on a
stage, just hangin at the bar or in a booth. she’d belt out a
torch song kinda loud, so people thought she was crazy. but
fucks were hard to come by at the time, & she didn’t give one.

she was crazy sexy, that made her just my type. I bought her
a drink & gave her the once over, heart to heels. like I lost
my high school ring somewhere under her dress, & I’d do any
desperate dirty thing to get it back.

maybe the idea of a strip search intrigued her, so we left to
cruise the moody night, not caring much where it took us. I
parked by the coast & we watched the anguished rain crash dive
into the waves.

I could have offered her a smoke & made classical references
to her allure, but I was fresh out of cigarettes & poetry. the red
of her lips could have been a warning of danger; if it was, we’d
burn together.

I edged over to her & kissed her, kissed her hard. & for awhile,
maybe as long as the storm lasted, we wouldn’t be part of all
the great & precious things out there that are lonely…
