Under the Mirror Ball

Under the Mirror Ball

[Tracy rises up the ladder from the school pool dripping. John gazes at her long tan legs sparkling with sprinkles of water. She gazes back at him with her blonde hair laying wet across her breasts.]

Tracy
Do you like me John?

John
As a friend. [She hangs to the ladder smiling knowingly.]

Tracy
No John. I think more than that.

[John and Tracy stand on the bleachers of the school gym. She wears workout shorts.]

Tracy
John you make being a nerd an attractive quality in a man.

John
I’ll take that as a compliment.

Tracy
I love your horn rimmed glasses. I could kiss you all over. However, I’m saving myself for marriage. You are the marrying type. I can tell.

John
In two months we’ll graduate high school. We’re already eighteen. That gives me something to look forward too. We can move to the west coast. We weren’t meant to live in a small Mississippi town.

Tracy
You’re telling me. But let’s move to New Orleans. We can be free spirited there. I’ve always wanted to show my breasts at Mardi Gras.

John
You would be the main attraction with your shapely endowments.

Tracy
You sure know the way to a girl’s heart John. Let’s make a date at the skating rink this Saturday night. I want to spin the floor with you.

John
Aren’t we a little too old for the skating rink? I was sixteen the last time I did that.

Tracy
You’re only as old as you feel. When I’m eighty I’ll still be cutting a rug. Will you be my partner then?

John
You are a very persuasive woman. You’ve convinced me. I’ll wear my plaid pants for you.

Tracy
Plaids are out of style. However, I’d love to see you in them. You are a fashion rebel.

John
What a lovely phrase. You are an aesthetic reactionary.

Tracy
I’ll take that as a complement coming from you. I’ve got to change out of my gym shorts for class. Care to join me in the locker room?
John
Oh my, what a great invitation. But there would be other girls there. Now that does sound enticing.

Tracy
Don’t you dare look at other girls around me or I’ll spank your bottom.

John
Tracy did I ever tell you about my fetishes?

Tracy
Oh so you’re a freak. Let me tell you a secret. I’m into that too. I must go now. I’ll blow you a kiss. Now I must disrobe.

John
Parting is such sweet sorrow. I know it’s an overused quote.

Tracy
Let me give you a real kiss on the cheek. Now you’ve got a lipstick mark.

John
You are bold and free. The guys will kid me about your mark. But I won’t wash it off today.

Tracy
John. I have a confession. I know I seem audacious, flirty, and daring. However, I’m still a virgin. I can tell you are too. You don’t have to tell me.

John
I would have never guessed. Your secret is safe with me. Your woman’s intuition divined right about me.

[At the skating rink. Sweethearts under the glow of strobe lights, black lights, rainbow-hued spinning light dots, and the spinning mirror globe that hides and illuminates young love all at once.]

Tracy
I’m so glad you made it here my dear. Now let’s take a whirl around this place. They’re playing “Dancing Queen.” That’s our song.

John
You look psychedelic under the mirror ball lights. The smile on your face is like the sun. Hold my hand and I’ll take you on a trip.

Tracy
You look adorable in your geek outfit. Here we go my wonderful freak.

John
Look at you. You look like a Roman priestess with your eyes on fire.

Tracy
Careful my eyes don’t burn you. Mama told you never to look into the eyes of the sun.

John
But Mama that’s where the fun is. You funny girl. That Manfred Mann song is apropos. I can’t help but look now.

Tracy
Watch out my dizzy lover. We don’t want to bump anyone. I wouldn’t want to make you crash.

John
I’m already crashed. You have me spellbound.

Tracy
Let’s sit together and have a coke. I’m out of breath.

John
I’m breathless too. A soda sounds great.

Tracy
Oh there’s your friend Keith.

John
Let’s say hello to him. Hey Keith.

Keith
You two look marvelous together. Let me show you something. Stand facing each other.

Tracy
Nothing weird please. I’m not ready for that.

Keith
Don’t worry. It’s just something innocent.

John
If Tracy is game I am.

Tracy
Well ok.

Keith
Now Tracy. Wrap your arms around John like this. See. John put your arms around Tracy. There you two go. You look like a couple now.

Tracy
I’ve never been like this with a man before. This is a first for me. John, say something.

John
This is new for me too. But you make it nice. I couldn’t wish for a better girl for a first.
Tracy
John you say the sweetest things. Now let’s get our cokes.

Keith
See you guys later. Enjoy your first date John.

John
You gave away my secret. I didn’t want Tracy to know I’d never gone out with a girl.

Tracy
Oh this drink is so refreshing. In a minute I want you to take me around the rink again. I’m sorry I can’t kiss you on the lips yet. I’m not ready for that. However, I love kissing your cheek. Your skin is so soft and boyish.

John
Well that coke went down nice. Hey they’re playing “Get Down Tonight.” Care to join me for another spin?

Tracy
Oh I love that song! Let’s do it!

John
Let me take your hand my darling one.

Tracy
John I feel my youth slipping away. Hold onto me and never let go.

John
Lovers will come and go. Yet we will remember this as our golden age. One day in some city I’ll think of you. For now we have Disco music and each other. This moment is the real thing. Live it with me in perfect harmony my love.

Tracy
Oh John you sound like a coke advertisement.

John
I know. But I meant it sincerely.

Tracy
That is what I love about you. You know I could use a kiss now. Pucker up my boy. How lovely. John, you kiss like my cousin.

John
Well it was only my first try.

Tracy
It was my first kiss too. I always wanted my first to be with a boy like you.

John
I confess I always wanted to kiss you.

Tracy
You are beautiful. I have a couple of questions for you before we go steady. If Farrah Fawcett wanted you for a boyfriend would you stay with me?

John
Of course I would. You are prettier without make up than her all dolled up.

Tracy
Oh John I am swooning. Now, if a kidnapper said, “It’s either you or the girl” What would you do?

John
I’d do what any true gentleman would do. Does that answer your question?

Tracy
Yes! Yes it does. They’re playing “Saturday Night Fever.” Be my John Travolta tonight on the skating floor. I wouldn’t leave you for him either.
