Dark Day

The thaw did not break evenly
Shards of ice pierced my eyes
Players, disguised as tears of joy

The hurt bubbled on
Impure, volcanic mud
Lumps of lava impregnated with hate
Scolded into every thinking cell
I thought my mind may, literally, explode

New lambs bleat and starlings chatter
Heralding spring. Hope, excised by despair
It is a self-deception that winter had ended
Nothing ends, only abates, drops, lulls
Awakens
Rebirths

And so I cry my hot tears
I ask for forgiveness and I forgive
Such mundane lies, the deceit of love
As the nights shorten
My days darken, death speaks

(From my collection GREY SUN, DARK MOON, now available, 2015)
