The Biggest Part

There's an emptiness where you were
Where you are
And I don't think I'll ever shake it
Not completely
Yes I can live without
Even despite my strongest wants
But it's hard to pretend existence
Is all but fine and well
Because when you're not around, it isn't
Things just aren't the same
I miss the similarities and differences
How much there was to gain
Always learning, always growing
A friendship that was one of a kind
That comfort and understanding
Is not an easy thing to find
And all the anger that was at the surface
Never could have amounted to
The meaningful depth we shared
And great friendship we built
I treasure those foundations
gold plated  construction
Beautiful they were
But clearly not prepared for vicious storms
And no one could have told us different
There was no way we could predict it
You and I really had faith that
We knew what we were doing
And how to keep from losing
We sure thought we had it made
And that we'd get through anything
But life has a way of
Throwing surprises in your face
We both gave our best efforts
And there's nothing else that could be asked
Maybe there were workarounds we couldn't see
Or maybe some things just can't be patched
But I can't waste my time on blame
I'd rather spend it on memories that remain
Because I plan not to forget the good
That you and I created
The bad times don't negate it
I wish we would have had the knowhow
To recover from damage that has been done
And I wish we had the strength to
Really believe it was achievable
Because you were the biggest part of my life
And now you're the biggest part in it
Years of connection, sliced
I understand the reasons
And though it's probably for the best
Still nothing about it feels right
