Need Not Apply
I was never a fan of the Greek system
while attending a UC school
the number one ranked party school
where the frats seemed like
a vanilla flavored country club
too much testosterone with not
enough respect for the word consent
Then there is the de facto segregation
the schools now segmented along zip codes
and the most segregated day of week
is Sunday at the time of worship
while too many privatized prisons
wherehouse people of color
or those lacking funds for quality legal care
It has come to my attention that even on Deep Underground
there are pockets of exclusivity
it is fine if you are a passive reader
but as for collaborative projects
better luck finding another tree to climb
can't force a meeting of the minds
so nothing like a sanction can be done
A plethora of reasons can be given
for a writing exclusive club
tradition, familiarity, and even just plain like
just a different attitude then what I follow
for I enjoy any exchange in construction
whether it be a friend or a newer artist
both have such value
So I should be so bothered
by the lack of affinity for branching out
or providing endless comments
while having poems in which
not even a "good" or "bad" can be found
then again perhaps those words aren't worth the effort
but even that feedback
is preferable to silence
And really it may be all my ego
for a poem certainly isn't produced
just for societal props
the process of creation is a reward in itself
and yet can we say that this site
would be as popular without
the ability to get feedback
(indeed no comment is feedback after all)

I've been an observer of societies since I was a kid, interesting the things picked up by doing so.
( parties I had as a teen would break off into pocket socites - even the music heads as bands practiced during these events- and there were some who flirted about the fringes)
I know here in DU , with my odd nature and being....some days my visits are for reading and wandering- with the social ills of not wishing to open my trap and verbalize anything.
Other times I feel driven to interact, by what some folks Write.
Usually days I produce anything- I'm not in the frame of mind for commenting or interaction.
- everyday changes-
Strangely or not so strange....interaction with the outside world or the virtual Depends upon mood and frame of mind- I blame much to being an only child-
But I do say....I prefer the souls of DU than the folks of my surrounding towns- a lot more like- minded and less hunting trucks running around.
I try to pick up new folks every month or two.
But again, commenting lies with frame of mood.
voice for me is almost hand in hand with ego....when it's strong enough...I speak....when it's dim- I'ts barely a whisper.

Hey buddy just excuse my rant. I was just noticing I don't seem to be the only one who can get more then 200 reads on a single poem but not even a single one word comment. Or even more frustrating is when you get all the reads and a poem is placed in a Reading List with no comment. If I am going on someone's list I would like to know what worked. Again excuse my little tirade.

I will be honest I have been one to place a poem on my like list without comment--I thought (in my mind at least) that being placed on a reading list is like the top honor. But I get wanting to know why...what was the tick for the add...or even why doesn't it get added.
In terms of collaborations I have only done one back in the beginning of my time here, for me its an intimidating thing..(not good enough etc...
For me I wonder why I have a harder time branching out of my usual reads or poets...self reflection time I guess!

I think I was looking for something that would encompass both; a location in which things are stored but also asking the question of where can one find a positive collaborator. I am not going mention names but you are far from who I had in mind.
This is just my opinion, but if I see a poem with 100 or so reads and I think highly enough to put it on my reading list, I want that poet to get a review he/she can really use. I think it is sad when that many people take time to read it, goes on list, and no one can even formulate one statement about it.

Segregation is a byproduct of pride. It takes many forms, depending on the circumstances and scope of what he majority is and what they want to control. It is a part of every clique and community all the way to institutional discrimination because every human being has the potential to allow the seeds of hatred to grow within them and choke them with pride, greed and fear. College dorms and city neighborhoods can be a breeding ground for prejudice or they can be places of discovery where preconceived notions can be leveled to common ground.
Another website I post poems on has had many of the same problems hat exist here on dup. I wrote a poem called "Knot in the Loop" about my experiences there with cliques and prejudices. Nowhere is unaffected by prejudice. The human condition is such that I believe there may never be an end to hatred because there will never be an end of fear, greed and pride. That is why I wrote "3 Seeds" and it has been in my field of awareness since I was 5. A lifetime of observation on the phenomenon of discrimination has shown me that I am not immune to it, even though I am aware of it and despise it. Even animals with very little intelligence and single-celled creatures are capable of discrimination. If it is so engrained in our DNA that even the simplest of life-forms with not so much as one brain cell can discriminate and kill that which is not the same, while socializing with like creatures, how can we ever overcome it when we have the ability to rationalize our behavior in the face of logic? We can always find an excuse not to allow people in our exclusive club, because that is easier than trying to change the minds of the majority and to risk our own position in the hierarchy of hatred.
