The Day I Met Steven Spielberg

I was twelve years old
my uncle an exec for Proctor and Gamble
was invited to a luncheon at Spielberg's house

excited to meet a celebrity
with giddy anticipation
I went to his beach front house in Malibu

crest fallen and unimpressed
who was this everyday guy
in shorts and a ball cap?

my sisters and I disinterested with him
were beckoned by the call
of the beautiful sandy beaches we saw outside

while my sisters waded in the surf
me calling them chicken for not going in deeper
I went boogie boarding

having a blast in the ocean
I was oblivious to the fact
that the undertow had me

being drug further and further out
until I stepped off my board
took a look back and realized

I was in deep at least a mile
from the shoreline
fear gripped at my heart

as I tried to swim back to shore
grabbed by the undercurrent
I was losing energy, about to drown

no life guard on this private beach
I was lost, running out of energy fast
way past the breakers

no hope for me in sight
then out of nowhere
a wind gust and a tidal wave

scooped me up
pushing me towards the coastline
face smashed in the sand

held underwater by this tremendous wave
for quite awhile, I was finally released
where I could touch the ocean's bottom

I believe to this day that the powers that be
saved my life whether it be god or the devil
I'm still here for a reason

I often wonder why my life was saved
pondering how come I wasn't Steven's next child star
no answers come maybe in the end he was unimpressed by me
