Softer Music

The music is too loud for me in this club
And I feel suddenly old and out of place within its walls
The pounding beat and repetitive music is not my style
And my style is not welcome here
I’ve seen the looks, not hostile but simply questioning
I question myself as I sip my drink
With a plan to leave once the liquid is gone I just look around
At the young men and women as they dance a dance I could never repeat
And scream to be heard above the primal beating of drums and screeching electronics
Then my eyes pass by one look, and return to it in surprise
For it is the same look I think I wear myself
Wondering why she is here
As she sips on her tall and colorful drink
My second look is more electric, I feel its connection from my seat at the bar
It’s a look that I know though never thought to see in this place
Or on a face so much younger than mine must have looked in its previous disappointment
And the shared thought is easily read by both
Let’s get out of this place and go home
It doesn’t matter which or whose
It’s the heartbeat connecting over distance
Knowing that you are the reason I came here tonight, though I knew it not when I came
We leave the pounding beat hand in hand like we’ve known each other
Long days and nights
On our way to find out if we will find that electricity
In our talk and our bodies
As we make our own softer music tonight
