Summer Love

This summer, trimmed in your kisses, sewn up in your love
I thought to re-educate myself on the sorrows love can bring
but failing that class, I became a student of love's addictive power

You said I've thrown you off kilter, suffering vertigo each time you pass
an open window and want to call  my name, dizzy in the sound of me on
your lips, our nights shine as day and day murders all doubts.

In our rambling, messy home we make love  in each room, set standards
that go deep into the earth like kids digging to china in their backyard.
I eat your poppies and you dine on my lovesick mouth, we play on the porch
and let this unending summer of rain and love wash over our hearts and

teach us what school or well-meaning family never could.
