what hurts most
is not hammers to hands
or razor blades to wrists
it’s the suspicion
that true love does not exist.
it is these itches
that make men
jump off cliffs.
it is these itches
that make women
leap before locomotives.
this dying off
of good men and women
is what allows
false love to persist.
