The Wishing Well part 1

Placed in the middle of the ample garden
Built of stones gathered by the river
Shaded by great Magnolias
Surrounded by honeysuckle and yellow roses

It would come to be so much more than an inanimate object
Became a driving force in true love
At the moment just part of their playtime

This old well is where they met
Two youngsters scampering about
Oh, the innocence of youth
It was 10 years before the Civil War broke out

Just two silly lil kids playing with friends
She was dressed prim and proper
He wore short britches and suspenders
Chasing one another around that big ol' plantation yard

As they matured their games changed too
The chase alone wasn't enough anymore
That young buck was ready to catch his prize
All alone one day he tossed in a single gold coin

"Oh, God in Heaven
Please hear this plea
I love her so very much
Please let it be"

What he didn't know is this
There she was alone in the gazebo
His Southern Angel hanging on every word
As he turned to leave she was there with a kiss

Three years later she threw her first garden party
Ready to announce their engagement to all
Within seven days the news would reach them
The South had succeeded and taken their stand

They took off that very night
Needed a Justice of the Peace fast
Augusta Mae became Mrs Dutton before daylight
Nervousness set in because it was time to consummate this union
Neither ever knowing the flesh of another

Married only two weeks and his orders arrived
Despite his own beliefs he would be dressed in grey
Bowing to the pressures around him
Fighting his father's war for fear of disownment

While gazing at the soldier in the mirror
Sobbing was coming from outside
There stood his beautiful wife
Tossing coins into their well

."Oh God in Heaven
Please hear my plea
I love him more than life
Please return him to me"

Tears running down both their faces
Would their next kiss be their last
This war would be hell on everyone
Frontline full of blood and fear.home front full of tears

Quickly descending the stairs
Luke rushed to hold the woman he loved
Their sorrow under the stars reaching up into Heaven
For the first time they made a wish together

"Oh God in Heaven
Please hear our plea
Our love transcends other's hate
Please end this war quickly"

This is a true chapter in my family's history
Part 2 will be posted very soon
