Long Ships

Not for me a normal everyday funeral
Don’t want to lovingly covered with dirt
I’ve been surrounded with dirt in life
A change would do me the world of good
I’ve never liked the idea of wooden coffins
It’s a bit like being laid to rest inside a wardrobe
In a exquisitely ornate Cuban cigar box
In a cigarette pack, seems a bit too ironic
Packed tight in like a lonely solo sardine

I can’t get all fired up about the idea of cremation
The burning sensation, the smoke and the smell
Ironically brings me back to all those cigarettes
That put me in the predicament I now find myself
Then, the conundrum about where the ash goes
Poured into a jar like homemade blackcurrant jam
Stuck in a vase like a compost growing no flowers
Sprinkled to the four winds unable to be reassembled

I suppose I could try old Egyptian mummification
But the horror films I’ve watched kinda puts me off
I could only consider burial at sea on one condition
That you solemnly promised to dance on my grave
Maybe I could be cryogenically frozen in a glass tube
To be defrosted once they discover a cure for death

Maybe it should be a combination of things here
But I want it majestic, regal, dramatically done
Send me out like a king in a Viking long ship
Flames gently flicking and licking around me
Wrapped lovingly in purple and black, satin
All my favourite possessions surrounding me
Happy that my bones and ashes slowly sink
Emulsifying slowly I become one with the sea
My remains finally put to bed
I always wanted to be a gangster
Tonight I will sleep with the fishes
