A Flare for the Modern Romance

 He said before he left

leave the door ajar
keep the flares unboxed
Just in case

To light when in distress
those long days
cold nights

He said before he left
not to let the pen dry up
keep the ink bleeding
these thoughts flowing

He'd find them
If I needed him to know
my feelings

He kissed me before leaving
lingers on my lips even now
these eight hours

Flares not touched
But my thoughts lighting the way
