The Family Meeting
Your eyes, pleasantly cloudy,
Idly indifferent
When the case worker
Brings the child into the room.
You pull out your phone

Slander on Facebook
While your child
Lays placidly
In a lively pink car seat,
Oblivious to your estrangement.
We all watch you from our seats
And with impeccable determination
Refuse to criticize
What we don’t understand.

Better days will come for sure...but not likely in the immediate future. Appreciate your hugs!!!

it reads as too sad and too personal
for me to comment, except to say
that it's written so well...

Even if you did understand it might not do much good. If you criticized he might just tell you to mind your own business, might deny you any further contact. This is heartbreaking, but it's up to him. Maybe he'll grow out of it and put away his toy. He's more the baby in this scenario, seems to me. Very sad but very fine write Virginia.

Crow, thank you for your insightful thoughts. It's a very difficult situation and fraught with heartbreak, just as you say.

This is so sad. Poor little child, rejected from the start for whatever circumstances...as if they can be anything but what they are while the strange scary world around them chooses a life for them, or denies them. Wish more people thought about the child in situations like this.
Fantastically written dear Virginia. I felt this one. Sorry about the soapbox...this kind of thing hits me hard sometimes.

How unfortunate that sounds. You seem to have painted the relationship between the mom (?) and child succinctly. The distance is tangible in your words. And then to end in utter restraint.
