(for a tale of enchantment & forbidden love
 may only begin thusly)

Once Upon a Time ~

on a night when a thousand thousand stars
gleamed in the Camelot skye

I, being rogue & far too bold, approached her chambre
from a respectful distance, offered my appeal
that we might make a song in unison ~ a ballade
that has been writ by no minstrel nor maiden
her elegant quill to calligraphe upon my impudent parchment

out of intrigue, perhaps, or pity, she accepted the dare
and bid me wait in my lonely barracks
after nights of anguish, I received by flighted delivery
upon the back of an eagle, her poetical engraving

unorthodox was her voice, & her hand a-lined the page
with rebelist grace ~
were a lyric of more beauty rendered in other days
my eyes were not worthy to chance upon it

I hastened to proclaim my gratitude
and reached for her hand upon bended knee
such humility as is strange to a scarred warrior
she bid me rise, & by some efflorescing of ardor
she kissed my hand ~

my vision at once was obscured by the vilest tears
for a knight is a soldier, & a soldier never cries
man of iron – weeping would but rust his armor
my sword has slain heathens
whose code was to rape & pillage
my hands are stained with the blood of dragons
whose breathing fire seared my flesh
Crusades have beckoned me to unholy lands

yet I am not brave nor brash enough to embrace her
such a voyage may only be traversed
in the realms of sleep ~
dreams are as vacant as dead stars, & I will not dream

I, who am neither Galahad nor Lancelot
pledge to my Guinevere, who is not Guinevere
but the Fairest Nicole ~

were all my days & nights heaped upon the pyre
and my legend dwindle to sailing embers
I would remain

Your Cherished
